When passengers are denied boarding by an airline, it is usually as a result of an aircraft overbooking seats on a flight. This is usually caused by the airline selling more tickets than are available, in the hope that some passengers don’t show, as a way to maximise profits. When this happens, the first step for the airline is usually to ask passengers to volunteer to give up their reservation in return for benefits. If there are not enough volunteers, the airline must deny boarding to a number of passengers against their will, and in this case, compensation can be claimed from the airline. EU Regulations give such passengers the right to claim compensation to cover the cost of the ticket (within seven days of the original flight) or to cover the cost of a return flight to the first point of departure, or for any re-routing to get to their destination. Passengers who are denied boarding are also entitled to meals and refreshments, hotel accommodation, and transport to and from the hotel accommodation. They are also entitled to two phone calls, access to emails, telex and fax.
